Our proposal is a forestry adaptation of the CSA, where the community is global, and production is intergenerational.
The history of AgroforestDAO is intertwined with the history of its founder, Diogo Jorge, a permaculturist created by IPEMA in 2008, that is, also an agroforester and juçara grower. Many of the actions that helped us get here can be seen on the blogs - now outdated - Permacultura do Saracura and Projeto Nossa Horta.
Living in the countryside since 2010, but aware of the evolution of the p2p internet, my family and I remained connected to global networks such as Wwoof and Airbnb, which offered tangible exchanges, in contrast to social media in which users are the product. In a quest to use technologies to optimize the socio-environmental regeneration process, the arrival of Blockchain technology, or Web3, was inevitable as it offers previously non-existent coordination tools. Through it we believe it is possible to realize the idea of a rooted global tribe.
Our proposal to use technology to recognize the intellectual capital of agroforestry was awarded in a climate hackathon and with the award we created our first collective account on the blockchain, together with signatories from different countries, we got involved with the emerging field of Regenerative Finance (ReFi) and we started to build community around this idea while participating in global mutual support rounds for projects focused on the common good, like Gitcoin and Giveth.
Thanks to the immutability and transparency of blockchain, we can create lasting bonds between co-producers. We can create frameworks for education and training where we recognize apprentices, mentors and masters, and thus create a “career plan” for urban or rural young people who simply want to have dignity and make a positive difference in their community.
In autumn 2023 we carried out our first decentralized cultivation experiment with the sale of quotas that represented a share in the harvest. In the spring we carried out a joint effort to plant an Agroforestry System (SAF) with a focus on grains (rice in the spring and beans in the autumn), of ½ hectare and with the participation of supporters from MG, SP, RJ, SC and even Ukraine. Everyone had their participation recognized with Hypercerts on chain certificates. The evolution of the system is shared periodically, with the aim of building collective knowledge about SAFs and offering the experience of seasonality.
